Venetian Castle of Zakynthos

This prominent castle, rebuilt in the 15th century during Venetian rule, is located on Bohali Hill above Zakynthos Town. It served historically as a fortress against invasions and now offers visitors stunning panoramic views of the harbor and town. The castle grounds include several churches, making it not only a scenic spot but also a cultural one. It’s a fantastic location for history enthusiasts and hosts various cultural events throughout the year.

Romani Castle

Situated near the village of Romiri, Romani Castle is largely in ruins, providing a glimpse into the island's Byzantine past. For those interested in archaeology and medieval history, this site offers a quiet and less commercialized experience. It’s perfect for visitors looking for a deeper historical exploration away from the usual tourist paths.

Paliokastro (Old Castle)

Near Macherado, Paliokastro dates back to the Byzantine era and served as a defensive stronghold. Today, it stands mostly in ruins, with some walls and gates still visible. This site is ideal for hiking and offers a chance to see Zakynthos's historical architecture in its raw form, appealing to those who enjoy combining physical activity with historical inquiry.
